The racing in Le Mans Ultimate is based on the real-world FIA World Endurance Championship (and associated series), hosted by the Automobile Club de l’Ouest (ACO) and Le Mans Endurance Management (LMEM).
Multiple Car Classes on Track
- Hypercar – Fastest and most technologically advanced.
- LMP2 – High-downforce, spec chassis class.
- LMGT3 – Slower GT cars designed for close competition and endurance. Features ABS in onboard systems for more controlled braking. Used in FIA WEC since 2024.
- LMGTE - Also GT cars at slightly faster specification than LMGT3 cars. No ABS so may lock up under braking.
- LMP3 - Lower spec prototype machines*
*coming soon as part of the European Le Mans Series (ELMS) expansion.
Each class has a different pace, acceleration, and cornering ability, creating layered racing within one event.
A typical FIA World Endurance Championship race includes Hypercars and LMGT3 races from 2024 onwards. However, the 2023 season included the LMP2 category and the GTE category cars.
The European Le Mans Series includes LMP2 (higher performance level than FIA WEC), LMP3 and LMGT3.
Shared Track, Separate Races
- Even though all classes race on the same track simultaneously, each is effectively competing in its own race.
- You can win your class without finishing anywhere near the top overall.
- Drivers often specialize in a specific class based on skill and preference.
Class-Specific Strategy
- Overtaking and Being Overtaken: Faster classes must safely pass slower cars in traffic. Slower classes must hold their line and maintain predictability.
- Traffic Management: Key to racecraft. Knowing when to yield and when to push can gain or lose critical time.
- Blue Flags are advisory, not mandatory: The responsibility is on the faster car to pass cleanly.
